Lessons from Alanis. Part 2

She was seriously ahead of the game

This week’s “blog post” is an email I sent to my community. If you’ve been loving these posts and want to get your eyes on some juicy stories that engage, educate, AND serve as an example on email storytelling, come join us! If you decide it’s not your thing, you can leave at any time 😉

I feel like we’re in the eye of a hurricane right now.

Not that I’ve ever experienced a real one 😅

But it’s that nice “calm” moment between the chaos of Thanksgiving weekend and the upcoming insanity of the last min holiday hustle.

Though if I’m being honest…

It took me a LONG ass time to recover from all the BFCM deals.

All weekend, I was on constant inbox duty.

It was non-stop deleting emails so they wouldn’t pile up and create an overwhelming task once all the sales were over.

Of course, with my eye on the inbox all day…

I also found a deal or two I wanted to take a deeper look at.

(We can blame the copywriter in me. Everything is an example to learn from 😉)

So I traded piles of emails for piles of sales pages…

And offers I just couldn’t live without.

Or so they wanted me to think 🙄

Instead, I was skeptical… surrounded with over-the-top promises and marketing buzzwords that really seemed too good to be true.

Or turned me off completely.

And then, something unexpected happened that made me laugh…

And then deeply reflect.

All in a matter of minutes.

I found myself mockingly singing the chorus to one of Alanis Morissette’s songs.

Yup, that’s right, my new biz bestie decided to come back.

(Did you miss her first appearance? No worries, I turned that email into this post for your viewing pleasure 😉)

The song of choice this time?

“I'll teach you all this
In eight easy steps.
A course of a lifetime
You'll never forget.”

Who knew Alanis was ahead of the game with all this online marketing BS? 😂

After that I just HAD to listen to the whole thing.

And that’s when she hit me hard with another biz lesson.

Damn it, Alanis. AGAIN?!

“How to sabotage your fantasies by fears of success.”

Pause.

Rewind.

Relisten.

*sigh*

Yup. She’s right. She’s so effing right.

How did you feel when you read that line?

“How to sabotage your fantasies by fears of success.”

When I heard that, I was instantly reminded of how sometimes, we’re so scared of failure that we stop ourselves from even getting started.

BUT also… How the fear of success is sometimes just as paralyzing, if not MORE, than the fear of failing.

Seems silly, but it’s a real thing.

I mean, think about it:

What if it all works out and you have HUGE success?
What is that even going to look like?
What if that means more money to manage, more processes to figure out, more tasks to take care of…

The fact that your future reality might look WILDLY different than where you are now can be, well, scary AF.

But when you stop and really think about where you are now…

Would the you from 5 years ago have been overwhelmed with everything your badass self is able to accomplish?

You better believe it.

I know my past self is in sheer awe of what I’ve accomplished in just a year.

And five years ago?

I had snot-fingered kindergarteners fighting over the coveted hot pink marker…

And sixth graders telling me off because they knew their mom wouldn’t do anything about it 🙄

(I just keep telling myself it all made me stronger)

The thought of leaving a career to start a business and venture in the unknown wasn’t even on my radar yet.

But look at me now.
But look at US now.

We got to where we are now because we were hungry for change.

We were sick of the things we were “supposed” to do and excited to start playing by our own rules.

And if that means the future is filled with even more unknowns…

Unknowns created by following our dreams and reaching new levels of success?

We’ll figure it out.

Just like we’ve done to get to where we are now.

And I’d like to argue that the best part of going on these crazy journeys is that we’re left with something no one else has.

We’re creating new stories.
Our very OWN stories.

We’re learning new lessons.
We’re shifting our perspectives.
We’re growing bigger. better. badasser. (new word for today 😏)

And with every single one of those experiences…

👉🏻 You uncover more content to write about.
👉🏻 You gain more relatable moments to share with your audience.
👉🏻 You become living proof that what you’re doing works

👉🏻 And you get to enrich more lives because of it.

How effing cool is THAT?!

If you’ve been holding yourself back because success seems a bit scary…

Let’s challenge each other to start working through it.

Let’s show Alanis that we’re NOT going to sabotage our biggest dreams.

We get to show up big…

For ourselves AND for the people we serve.

So my friend, what’s that going to look like for you?

If you’ve got a shit-ton of incredible stories to share but you’re not really into the whole writing thing…

I get it. But that’s why I’m here.

Let’s chat and see how I can support you.

I’m always just a click away (and I promise, I won’t bite… but I might sing 🎶)

PS - Did you see? I’m famous now!

*ahem* okay… not famous. But I DID get the chance to share some sweet ass storytelling tidbits during a live Facebook training a few weeks back.

The replay is here, go take a peek!
